Built in 1929, the Apollo Victoria Theatre is one of London’s more modern theatres. Located just outside Victoria Station, away from the main hub of the West End, it has become one of the capitals most popular theatre venues. Historically home to some of the city’s best loved shows including Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s Starlight Express which played here for 18 years. Since 2006 it has been showing the hit musical Wicked, which tells the back story of the witches from The Wizard of Oz and has been delighting audiences and critics with its toe-tapping songs, winning lots of awards including an Evening Standard Theatre Award and three Tony’s from its spell on Broadway. It is one of the highest-grossing pieces of West End Theatre of the last decade and continues to attract thousands of theatregoers each week. Due to the Apollo Victoria’s excellent location, so many of London’s best-known attractions are within walking distance that its hard to list them all. Within half an hour walk you’ll find yourself at the famous green awnings of Harrods, before taking in posh Knightsbridge and then enjoying a relaxing stroll in St James’ Park where you’ll be able to see whether the Queen’s at home in Buckingham Palace. Or head towards the river to Tate Britain where you can gaze upon many home-grown masterpieces and enjoy free entry. There really is so much to do before or after the show.
